Composition and Function of Molecular Distillation Equipment

Molecular distillation is a commonly used purification and separation technology that primarily utilizes the evaporation and condensation characteristics of molecules under different pressures to separate substances.

Molecular distillation relies on the boiling point differences of the components in a mixture, as components with higher boiling points require higher temperatures to evaporate. However, in conventional distillation, these components may undergo thermal cracking or decomposition, leading to losses or reduced quality. In molecular distillation, the mixture is heated through a long-column device (known as a molecular sieve), causing the temperature to gradually increase inside the column. Since each component has a different boiling point, they evaporate and re-condense at different positions in the column. In some cases, the vapor can be collected at precise temperatures, maintaining its relative purity.

Molecular distillation equipment typically consists of a distillation tank, heater, condenser, pump, and other components. Below is a further introduction to the characteristics of these parts:

Distillation Tank: The distillation tank is one of the most important components of molecular distillation equipment. It needs to have excellent sealing performance to avoid gas leakage. Additionally, the distillation tank must be transparent to allow observation of the evaporation process, facilitating adjustments to evaporation and condensation conditions.

Heater: The heater usually provides heat through electric heating rods or oil bath heaters to elevate the temperature of the substance to be purified. The heater must have a stable heating power and an appropriate temperature range to ensure uniform and consistent evaporation rates.

Condenser: The condenser is the key component that converts the substance from a gaseous state to a liquid state, preventing gas loss. Condensers typically use water cooling or air cooling methods to ensure that the gaseous substance condenses inside the condenser at the proper rate.

Pump: The pump is mainly used to maintain the vacuum pressure inside the distillation tank, ensuring that the substance evaporates and condenses under low-pressure conditions. Common pumps include mechanical pumps and diffusion pumps.

Molecular distillation equipment is a highly efficient and precise purification and separation device, widely used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and food processing. Through well-designed components and their collaborative function, it enables the rapid, efficient, and precise separation of complex mixtures.
